THE KROGER CO. SAVINGS PLAN

The Kroger 401(k) Retirement Savings Account Plan covers approximately 262,794 participants. The plan invests through the Kroger Co. Defined Contribution Master Trust, which held approximately $11.6 billion in assets as of December 31, 2024. Trustee: Northern Trust. Recordkeeper: Merrill Lynch. Kroger uses a sophisticated white-label fund structure rather than a standard fund menu. Participants choose from 18 Kroger-branded investment options, including 14 custom-built units (US Large Cap Unit, Non US Equity Unit, etc.) that pool underlying collective investment trusts from managers like BlackRock and T. Rowe Price, plus 4 directly-held CITs. Notably, the plan does not offer target-date funds in the traditional sense; instead, participants select among the asset-class units to build their own allocation. This structure is common among mega-employers that want to control fees through institutional pricing and diversify across multiple managers without exposing that complexity to participants.

Why our allocations use only index funds

The actively managed funds in this plan cost more per year than the plan's index funds, which run roughly 0.02% to 0.06%. Decades of research on long-term active fund performance do not support reliable outperformance net of fees, which is why the allocation ideas below may consider using only the low-cost index options.
